ID: bring the passport
The legal drinking age in Thailand is 20, and the top rooms check. Bring your actual passport — a photo on your phone gets you through some doors and turned away at others, and a driver's licence from home is a coin flip. Keep it in a zipped pocket, not a back one. If the crew has anyone who looks under 25, this is the line that ruins the night if you skip it.
Dress code
Smart casual, same as a good room anywhere. Concretely:
- Fine: collared shirt or a clean tee, chinos or dark jeans, clean sneakers or shoes.
- Risky: shorts, tank tops, football shirts, flip-flops, hats. Some rooms let it slide midweek; the big ones don't on a weekend.
- Bangkok-specific: it's 32°C outside and 20°C inside. Light shirt, not a jacket you'll carry all night.
Rooftops and the scene restaurants are stricter than the clubs — no sportswear, no flip-flops, some no shorts. Pack one proper outfit for the big night.
Closing times
Most of Bangkok closes at 2am. A handful of rooms in designated entertainment zones — parts of Sukhumvit, Silom and RCA — are licensed later, and the top clubs on our list run into the small hours on the big nights. Plan the night backwards from the room that closes last, not forwards from dinner. That's what the driver's for.
Getting in
Cover charges at the big rooms are typically a few hundred baht and often include a drink; with a table, you're walked in. Lines happen on big DJ nights. A held table doesn't make the line disappear, but it does mean you're not standing in it wondering if you'll get a spot.
How a table works
- The minimum is a spend, not a fee. You order bottles and drinks against it. Tax and service (usually 17% combined) are added on top of what you order.
- Bottles come with mixers and ice; the girls at the table pour. Don't bring outside drinks — it's the fastest way to lose the table.
- Guests. A booth is sized for a number. Eight guys plus six people they met at the bar is a conversation with the manager, not a given.
- Tipping isn't expected the way it is in the US, but the table staff who look after you all night deserve something at the end. A few hundred baht, in cash, to the person who ran the table.
The rest
- Cash and cards. The big rooms take cards; the street doesn't. Carry some baht.
- Drugs. Zero tolerance, police included. Cannabis being sold on the street doesn't mean it's welcome in a club. Leave it.
- Getting home. Grab works, taxis work, the driver works best. Don't ride a scooter at 3am; it's the one thing that actually goes wrong for tourists here.
- Photos. Fine of the crew, not of the girls at the next table or the staff. Ask.
- Be decent. Bangkok's friendly because people are; the door staff remember. Our crews get treated well in these rooms because the last crew was.
